Bush continues to refuse to denounce the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth ad, preferring to attack 527 groups in general and MoveOn in particular. He says that SBVT isn't affiliated with the Bush campaign, but this NYT story (and accompanying must-see graphic) say otherwise.
Incidentally, that NYT graphic, though fine, is missing some facts about Merrie Spaeth, SBVT's spokesperson. Solicitor General Ted Olson (widower of GOP harpy Barbara Olson) is the godfather of her child. Also, Spaeth worked in the Reagan White House's press office, and was a consultant to Kenneth Starr during the Clinton impeachment. And her late husband ran for Texas lieutenant governor...on George W. Bush's ticket.
And, if SBVT is truly as independent of the Bush campaign as both Bush and the group claim to be, then maybe the campaign shouldn't be passing out SBVT fliers.
Nor should the Bush Administration talk about how they can control them.
(And if Bush hates these 527 groups so much, then why'd he sign the bill that created them?)
